The short answer
The best driving roads near Dubai are Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah for mountain hairpins, Jebel Hafeet in Al Ain for flowing curves, the road to Hatta for a mountain day trip, Al Qudra Road for desert sunsets, and Sheikh Zayed Road at night for the skyline.
Jebel Jais, Ras Al Khaimah
The UAE's highest road climbs through tight switchbacks to more than 1,500 metres, about 90 minutes from Dubai. Go early on a weekday for empty roads and cooler air at the top. It is the road for a Porsche 911, a McLaren or an M car.
Jebel Hafeet, Al Ain
A smooth, wide climb above Al Ain with long, flowing bends and a viewpoint at the summit. It suits grand tourers such as an Aston Martin, a Bentley Continental or a Ferrari Roma. Remember that Abu Dhabi radars have no tolerance.
Dubai to Hatta
Desert highway turns into rocky Hajar mountain roads, ending at the turquoise Hatta Dam, where you can kayak. It is an easy day trip and works well in a Range Rover or a family SUV.
Al Qudra Road
A straight, open road through the desert south of Dubai, known for lakes, cycle paths and sunsets. It is perfect for photos and for hearing a V8 or V10, within the speed limit. Keep to the paved road: rental cars must not be driven on sand.
Sheikh Zayed Road and the coast at night
For the city, drive Sheikh Zayed Road after dark past Burj Khalifa, then slow down along Jumeirah Beach Road or around Dubai Marina and Palm Jumeirah. A convertible is the car for it.
